Highlands Golf Club
A premier semi-private club with a rolling terrain and tall loblolly pines. This will be an enjoyable round of golf for everyone. It is a good test of golf, yet user friendly. Built in 1961 and renovated in 1986, the course is now reaching maturity. The concept behind the design was to take advantage of the large Loblolly and White pine trees and the rolling terrain of Georgia. The landscape is peppered with a variety of colors -- pear trees, crepe myrtles, and azaleas in bloom, and recently the rough was planted with a colorful wildflower mix. Highland has five lakes that come into play on seven different holes! A true example of the course's beauty is Hole #11, the signature hole, a 403-yard par 4. A good tee shot on this hole puts you on top of a hill in between two fairway bunkers. From there, your second shot can be very distracting as you gaze upon a kidney-shaped green, guarded by five bunkers and a beautiful Tennessee field stone walled pond. It is scenes like this that make playing Highland enjoyable for the experienced as well as the beginning golfer.

The Oaks Course
Historians say the famed Bobby Jones designed the original course. The layout has changed and nine holes were added. I bet Jones could break par, can you? Some of the local journalists have expressed themselves as well “... A kinder, gentler course..." with some of Atlanta's quickest, smoothest greens." -- Mike Blum, Atlanta Journal/Constitution and from the Georgia Golf News "... if there is a better value for your money and a better conditioned golf course around, we haven't seen it." The course only has 14 sand bunkers and 4 grass bunkers, but water is another factor. The front nine has four holes affected by water hazards and the back has five. #2 gets the water torture start with a 217-yard par 3 that features water to the left and front of the green. Don’t even think about hooking the ball here.

Indian Creek Golf Club
This course has taken quite a journey from its opening days in 1998: a drought, a management change, a name change and a huge improvement in conditions. To add to everything, its designer, Desmond Muirhead, died in 2002. This is one of my favorite Muirhead designs. Along with Muirhead Village that he designed with Jack Nicklaus, this one is a piece of artwork. From the designer words we hear, “The rhythm and sequence have been carefully modulated to balance the change of length, difficulty, grade and landscape. We start with three par fours just like the best links courses in Scotland. This helps get the golfers going in their round and speeds up play. The long par fours and short par fives are counterpointed with a cascading rhythm which should be sensed by the golfer as he progresses into the round. There are short par fours and both short and long par threes. Four water holes are embedded into each nine and we have thrown in a couple of symbols for good measure.” Gosh, he sure was smooth with words, too.

Cherokee Run Golf Club
Arnold Palmer's best local masterpiece is located in the heart of the site for the Olympic equestrian competition, but no horses are allowed on the course. You'll only find rolling hills, flowing creeks, lakes and breathtaking rock formations that provide beautiful scenery and challenging golf. Rated by GOLF & TRAVEL in the fall issue 1999 as one of Arnie’s Best 10 Courses. There are no houses on the course and Palmer uses the dogwoods blooming to compare it to Augusta National when he says, “That’s the impression I used to get walking the course … and it’s something people often say who have been there.” The fairways are well-maintained zoysia fairways and the all-bent greens give you the feel of East Lake, only tougher. When you stand on the tee boxes, there are fairways that look really narrow. Plan on a test of shot making and proper club selection for your approaches. Cherokee Run is “golf at its purest, surrounded by nature at its finest.”
