The Club at Cuscowilla
Designed Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, Cuscowilla may be the best of all
the Lak e
Oconee courses. This course, built in 1998 is already ranked the 10th
Best Modern Course in America by GOLFWEEK. It winds through rolling
meadows and valleys of pine, playing across several interior ponds. The
most celebrated holes, however, are those that start the second nine.
They play beside and carry the lake across an inlet. It may be a modern
course, but it has such a traditional, natural look. The bunkers feature
jagged edges and native clay soil base. A forecaddie is required for all
guests and believe me, he will earn his tip.
Harbor Club Golf Club
A
Tom
Weiskopf & Jay Moorish collaboration, built in 1991, is another Lake
Oconee treasure. You will soon discover this course is tight and hilly.
The greens are fast and medium-sized. Water hazards come into play on 8
holes. If you’re an old Mickey Mantle fan, then you may remember this is
where his Charity Golf Classic was held. It is truly a classic. From the
first hole where there is a creek down the entire left side and a lake
to the left and behind the green to the 440-yard finishing hole with its
bunkers and large sloping green, this will be a memorable round.
Cherokee Run Golf Club
On your way from Atlanta, this track is a must play. Arnold Palmer's
best local masterpiece is located in the heart of the site for the
Olympic equestrian competition ,
but no horses are allowed on the course. You'll only find rolling hills,
flowing creeks, lakes and breathtaking rock formations that provide
beautiful scenery and challenging golf. Rated by Arnie in the 1999 Fall
Issue of GOLF & TRAVEL as one of his Best 10 Courses. There are no
houses on the course and Palmer uses the dogwoods blooming to compare it
to Augusta National when he says, “That’s the impression I used to get
walking the course … and it’s something people often say who have been
there.” The fairways are well-maintained zoysia fairways and the
all-bent greens give you the feel of East Lake, only tougher. When you
stand on the tee boxes, there are fairways that look really narrow. Plan
on a test of shot making and proper club selection for your approaches.
Cherokee Run is “golf at its purest, surrounded by nature at its
finest.”
