Miami

Accommodations:

Doral Golf Resort & Spa

Location:

Miami.  Over the last few years, DORAL GOLF RESORT & SPA has invested millions in a complete renovation, and it shows.  One of the world’s largest golf resorts, featuring five championship courses.  The size of the golf area is overwhelming – 18 miles of fairways, more than 100 acres of lakes and more than 450 sand traps.  All of the resorts’ rooms and suites have been renovated and included a private terrace, oversized bath, and refrigerator and mini bar.  The aches and pains acquired from too many rounds of golf can be soothed at the spa. Doral’s five restaurants and lounges offer dining in both casual elegance and laid back comfort.  Includes double occupancy room, breakfast, resort fees, green fees, cart and taxes.

Courses:

Blue Course
Often called the “Blue Monster” and for good reason.  The wind really comes into play on this layout.  With its length, scattered traps and water on virtually every hole, the wind can turn this from a monster into a nightmare.  The 18th is considered that most difficult finishing hole on the PGA Tour.  Since 1962, this course has been home to the "Doral Open".  Dick Wilson created this Frankenstein, Raymond Floyd tried to change it and Tom Fazio rescued it.  Every golf magazine has this treasure in their top list.

White Course
Designed originally be Robert von Hagge and built in 1961 and redesigned by Greg Norman in 2000.  Now the course is better know as the "Great White" and is also home of the Franklin Templeton Shark shoot-out.   The course is a completely new golf course constructed on the parcel of land where the White and par-3 Green courses formerly existed.  It is relatively short and has a friendly atmosphere.  Some say it is easier than the others.  Let me know after you have completed it.  Hole 18 is another finishing hole.

Gold Course
Raymond Floyd tinkered with this Von Hagge design of 1967 as well.  His changes on this course went over much better with the players.  The course has narrow, well-bunkered fairways, including nine that are doglegs.  The signature hole is #18, a 397-yard, par 4, which calls for an approach to an island green.  Many say it is the most difficult course at Doral.  The Hooters Tour stops year and the young limber backs are truly tested.  Buy some extra balls, because it is hard to stay dry. Water comes into play on every hole.

Red Course
Another von Hagge  course built in 1962  that plays to a par 70 at 6146 yards.  It’s very playable.  The course was redesigned in 1989 and features undulating greens that can be difficult to read.  Hole #5 was changed from a par 5 to a par 3 in 1997.  The signature holes wind picturesquely around a man made lake that forces the golfer to think about placement rather than "driving for show."  In fact, water comes into play on half the holes.

Silver Course
The newest of the course with design by committee.  Von Hagge was joined by Bruce Devlin and Jerry Pate on this project. And it turned out very nice and has gotten even better after the recent renovation.  It is in great condition  … tight in spots … water on almost every hole.  It is most commonly known by its famous island green on the 14th hole which was used nationally on a "American Express" commercial.
