Cottonwoods Golf Club
This 1998 Hale Irwin design is very playable. With generous landing a reas,
this links-style course can be conquered if you avoid the water and
place your approach shots in the proper place on the huge greens. Irwin
created large multi-level putting surfaces with some of them split by
imaginative mounding that separate the hole. Averaging 8,500 square
feet, they can be very devilish. The entire layout was shaped with more
than 6,000,000 cubic yards of imported soil. A patchwork of Bermuda,
Crenshaw-bent and Zoysia grasses cover the terrain. Two of the favorite
holes are 13 and 16. The 13th is a 600-yard, par 5 that offers two
choices of approach shots. Splitting the green is a large mound with
bunkers guarding both sides of the green. Hole 16 is 181-yard par 3 with
the tees separated from the green with water. The putting surface is
dissected by more mounding. Three-putts abound with improper shot
making.
River Bend Links
This track was
also built in 1998 and designed by the renowned Clyde Johnston. It also
is a links-style course and has even less trees on it than the other
one. The windswept layout employs native grasses, sand and grass bunkers
and lakes to create the Scottish feel. Built on former Indian hunting
grounds, the course and surrounding land are still inhabited by deer,
fox, rabbit, cattails and coyotes, wildflowers and wild turkeys.
Johnston dubbed it as “field of dunes”. With water coming into play on 8
holes, restocking of golf balls may be necessary. The 18th may be one of
the best finishing holes in the state. This 427-yard par 4 features
water on both sides of the landing area as well as bunkers guarding both
sides of the fairway. The approach shot narrows into a green also
protected by bunkers and water. A beverage is in order upon completion.

The Club at North Creek
Located 15 m inutes
away in Southhaven, MS is another links-style course that Tracy May
designed in 1998. The fairways are fairly forgiving, with exception to a
couple on the back nine. Wetlands, water and mounds define the course.
From the back tees, the course only measures 6433 yards, but can play
tougher than it looks. The greens feature bent grass with zoysia collars
and the fairways are Bermuda. A bizarre feature of the course is a
double green at #13 and #15 with a tunnel for the cart path underneath
the center of the green. Ten of the holes have water coming into play
and the 18th will make you gulp big time. Stand on the tee box of this
511-yard par 5 and look at the landing area across all that water and
the hole doglegs the entire length of the water. With proper tee ball
placement and a lot of courage, the island green can be reached in two,
but be very careful.
