Bear Trace
at Harrison Bay
Part of the collection of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses
throughout the state. This track has grown in very nicely after a few
drainage glitches. Some g reat
lake views from the holes as you weave your way through the hardwood
forest. The second Bear Trace
course to open, Harrison Bay is destined to become a true classic in
this collection designed by Jack Nicklaus. Located approximately 20
minutes north of downtown Chattanooga, the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay is
surrounded by both water and heavily-wooded land, making an ideal
setting for the course. Referred to as "the best natural piece of land
for a golf course," the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay features Bermuda
fairways lined with soaring pine and hardwood trees. Although water
touches 12 fairways, there is more than sufficient room to hit safely.
Most greens are open in front, which makes the course more user-friendly
for high-handicap players and allows run-up shots. Fairway and green
side bunkers are designed in the traditional Nicklaus fashion and add
notable character to the overall integrity of the course. Like other
courses in the collection, the emphasis on playability is clearly
evident.
Eagle Bluff Golf Club
I don't know what you 'll
enjoy more, the outstanding golf course or the scenic views of
Chickamauga Lake and Harrison. The course has contoured and rolling
fairways, uphill and downhill elevation changes and meticulously
maintained greens. Even though this course has fairways that are tree
lined and is in a residential setting, they still provide generous
landing areas. The fast greens are severely undulating and difficult to
read. Water hazards come into play on four holes. The signature hole is
#3, a 180-yard, par 3, featuring an elevated tee box situated on a bluff
that overlooks Lake Chickamauga and requiring a tee shot to a green
approximately sixty feet below the tee box. Former home of the NGA/Hooter's
Tour stop in Chattanooga.
WindStone Golf Club
Voted Chattanooga #1 Golf Course by the Chattanooga newspaper in 2002.
WindStone features a front nine with twenty sand bunkers and a
meandering creek th at
comes into play on six of the nine holes. The back nine of WindStone is
carved out of a virgin hardwood and pine forest and resembles a mountain
course. With the exception of the challenging 18th hole, the holes play
either level or downhill, with an array of dog-legs and hazards that
make for an exciting round of golf. This course has tree-lined fairways
and undulating greens. Water comes into play on eight holes. The
signature hole is #8, a 396-yard, par 4, featuring large fairway bunkers
and a shallow green protected by a creek and a rock bank in front. This
is a private club in a residential community.
Brainerd Golf Course
This is a very inter esting
muni course with a great layout and a front nine that is especially
strong. Both water and sand come into play. It stretches out to almost
6500 yards of fun. The longest par five is only 505 yards and it’s not
much of strain to reach them in two. The first hole is the number one
handicap and you finish with the #2 toughest one. The rolling terrain
and the huge mature trees, makes Brainerd a beautiful setting for golf.
I always try to find Donald Ross courses and this 1926 model has stood
the test of time.
Moccasin
Bend Golf
Club
Moccasin
Bend Golf Club is a challenging 18-hole, par 72 course that
appeals to golfers of all abilities. Located on the banks of the rolling
Tennessee River and within view of historic Lookout Mountain and Signal
Mountain, Moccasin Bend Golf Club is just a 6-minute drive from downtown
Chattanooga. It’s pretty cool looking up and seeing historic
Lookout Mountain overlooking the 13th hole.
The course features a gently rolling terrain with moderately difficult
greens, water hazards, and bunkers. The golf course has been getting a
great injection of love since 2005 and it’s coming along very
nicely.
