Lake Lure.
This property is located in Lake Lure east of Hendersonville and
Southeast of Asheville. To refresh your memory about these courses and
the area, rent a copy of the movie “Dirty Dancing”. It was shot here
and you can see Jennifer Grey before her nose job. You can experience
the mighty Blue Ridge Mountain and the waters of the beautiful Lake
Lure. Chimney Rock Park and the Village of Lake Lure are just across
the lake. The Fairway Villas feature 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with 2
beds in each room. They have full kitchens, living room, dining area

Apple Valley
is one of the courses located at the resort. Designed by Dan Maples in
1986, it features well-guarded greensand tight fairways. Golf Digest
called Apple
Valley,
“One of the most beautiful mountain courses around”. It could also be
called “Creekside”, since creeks come into play so much. Water comes
into play on 12 holes. The #1 handicap hole is the 6th; a
433-yard par 4 that dogleg left with the creek running down the right
side of the fairway all the way to the green. A tough par 3 is #8,
which measures 194 yards from the blue tees. Hit a clean, crisp shot
here or the next sound you hear is “splash”. The back nine is more
adventure, culminating with 18 that is 564 yards that can be a nightmare
for anyone that slices the ball. A very fun round!
Bald Mountain
the original course at the resort, was built in 1968 by William B. Lewis
and was named for the rock-faced cliffs tow ering
over the course. Since this is a real mountain course, expect some side
hill lies. The fairways are narrow and there is plenty of water on this
track. Water hazards come into play on seven holes. #7, a 530-yard par
5will give you plenty of challenges. You will need a sweet drive to
avoid lying up with your second shot before the water that cuts from
left to right. The green is protected by a bunker on the right. The 15th,
another par 5 on the backside, will also give you fits with water off
the tee and again in front of the green.
Red Fox Country Club
Here is a great course that is worth the drive. Built in 1966 and
design ed
by Ellis Maples, Red Fox is extremely scenic and very serene. This
semi-private track features streams and a 25-acre lake that come into
play on several holes. The fairways were built on rolling terrain, so
expect some uneven lies. Red Fox is an excellent example of Ellis
Maples' architectural talent. Maples took a pretty piece of land and
turned it into a fine and tough country golf course. The fairways are
wide, and the greens are large and sloped. Plenty of bunkers surround
the green complexes. Before all
the recent huge high-profile courses were built, this course was rated
among America’s Top 100 by Golf Digest. Most recently in the March 2001
issue of Golf & Travel, the magazine calls it a “hidden gem”.
Cleghorn Plantation Country Club
Another treasur e
that is very worth the drive to Rutherfordton. This George Cobb design
of 1972 can be a watery grave and is very brutal from the tips. Many of
Cobb's resort/vacation courses are less demanding than his more serious
efforts. Cleghorn is not a vacation course. The fairways are lined with
mature cedar and oak trees. It is an excellent layout and each hole has
its own character. The terrain is hilly and several natural hazards
spread throughout the design. The greens are well bunkered and there
are three ponds, a lake and a creek that come into play on nine holes.
The 2nd hole, a 418-yard, par 4, is almost completely
surrounded by water. What a fun way to start! |
