The Golf
Course of the Mountain Gods
Experience New Mexico golf in one of the most spectacular
golf cou rses
in the country. Nestled among tall pine trees under the majestic Sierra
Blanca Peak is the impressive Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort
Championship Golf Course. Designed by Ted Robinson, this New Mexico Golf
course features an island fairway. The Championship Golf Course has
recently garnered a top spot in Golf Digest's "Top 40 Casino Golf
Courses" ranking. This course was built within a canyon at an
elevation 7,000 feet above sea level in 1976. Ranked #7 in the state
by Golf Digest, the fairways are wide open off the tees, but will narrow
as you near the greens. There are several trees and water hazards
coming into play. The finishing hole is quite a beauty with the lake
and a fountain and the mountain peaks as a backdrop. Word of Advice:
Deer, elk, bear and mountain lions have the right of way.
The
Links at Sierra Blanca
This mountainous course sits at 7,500 feet above sea level and is a
Scottish link-style on the front nine and more hills and elevation
changes in the back. It boasts great views
of the12,005 foot Sierra Blanca Mountain from just about every hole. A
little history is deserving;
In 1990, owners R. D. Hubbard and Ed A llred
of All-Hub Investments undertook the task of converting the old Sierra
Blanca Regional Airport into The Links at Sierra Blanca. With Senior
PGA Tour Player Jim Colbert
and architect Jeff Bauer at his side they tore up the tarmac and removed
the old hangars
and buildings. Using great land management
as they built the signature high rolling mounds throughout the golf
course there was not any dirt brought onto or off of the property.
Rated #9 in the state by Golf
Digest, this track has water hazards coming into play on four holes. #8
is a 121-yard par 3 with a lake to carry to the green. My favorite hole
is #3, a 435-yard par 4 where you must avoid the sand off the tee, then
negotiate the water to the left and back of the green.
The Lodge
Golf Course
This is one of those
courses that history demands that you play. It is difficul t
to believe this club was founded in 1898 by the railroad company and is
one of the highest courses at 9,200 feet in the world and is only 9
nines. As you tee off on the first hole, a 150 - foot vertical
drop welcomes you onto The Lodge golf course. And that's just the
beginning. At 9,000 feet above sea level, the terrain is as challenging
as it is beautiful. With the
old Scottish tradition of playing different tees and separate flags, you
can complete your 18 hole round.
