Brasstown Valley Golf Course
This track is a links-style, well-bunkered 7,000 yards of challenge
with water on 10 holes. The greens are fast and undulating. Designed by
Denis Griffiths of Chateau Élan fame and many other challenging courses,
this track is a rarity. This is a mountain course, but links-style. One
of the favorite holes is #6, a 422-yard par 4 that offers a watery grave
to anyone who hooks the ball off the tee or on your approach. The
signature hole is #18, a 438-yard par 4 that plays entirely uphill with
the mountains in the background. You will be happy you did not walk the
course. Golf Digest rates this as one of the top 20 courses in Georgia.
Play this track twice while you're here.
Mountain Harbor Country Club
Just across the North
Carolina border lays another golfing challenge. This Willard Byrd design
was built in 1992 on an old farm site and located in a valley surrounded
by the Great Smokey Mountains. The layout is on rolling terrain and the
fairways are wide-open and native grasses and wildflowers are a part of
the rough. Ponds, lakes and streams come into play on thirteen holes. #7
can be a distracting hole. This 190-yard par 3 has a lake between you
and the green, but adds to the challenge with a stream and a row of
bunkers between the lake and the green. If the lake doesn’t get you then
the stream or bunkers will try. Success here is needed because the
number one handicap hole follows. Two lakes and the meandering stream
come into play five times on this 434-yard par 4. The course was
nominated by Golf Digest as the “Best New Private Course for 1993.”
