Barnsley Golf
Club: The General
A golf course crafted in a pristine woodland setting with only golf,
your partners and the wildlife. Designed by one of America's foremost
golf experts, Jim Fazio, opened in 1999. He created a beauty with
no two holes alike and features memorable dramatic elevation changes. If
you can keep the distractions to a minimum (impossible with wild turkeys
gliding across the fairway), you will score well. The course is
called The General and is ranked #13 in the state by Golf Digest. This
par 72 layout plays to 7,350 yards from the back tees, and is
a true test for golfers of any skill level. The course blends into the
surrounding landscape, providing beautiful vistas of the mountains and
the estate. If you’re going to take on The General, take plenty of
ammunition. For the first two holes, golfers might just believe they’re
in Scotland instead of northern Georgia, But hold the bagpipes; because
once they reach Hole #3 all such thoughts vanish. At “The Alley”, one of
Barnsley’s challenging par three’s, golfers enter a hardwood forest.
Tall reeds, cattails and thick brush underneath a tree-lined fairway
offer a tricky hazard to the green’s right side. The course just keeps
getting better from there.
Fields Ferry Golf Club
Depending on the direction you are arriving to Barnsley, you must try
these two following Arthur Davis designs. Course offers beautiful views
of Blue Ridge Mountains in distance and a covered pavilion for
tournaments. Located North, this Calhoun links-style course offers two
distinctly different nines, with the front measuring some 300 yards
longer than the back which can inflict some damage as well. Signature
hole #16, 480-yard, par 5 requires an approach shot to an island green.
Think about going for the green in two ... it's a gutsy shot.
Stonebridge Golf Club
South of Barnsley in Rome is where you'll find this Arthur Davis design.
He actually rode horseback into thi s
heavily-wooded area to pick the best setting. The gently rolling
fairways in the Appalachian foothills offer a nice view of the nearby
mountains. A huge 127-acre lake comes into play on three holes and
there are marshland-type hazards throughout the course. One of my
favorite holes is #9, a classic risk/reward par 5 with a lake in play on
all three shots. The lake borders the fairway and surrounds most of the
green and of course the only way to the green or the layout is to carry
the lake. Lots of fun!
