Sand
Barrens
This facility has
three nine hole courses that can be played in three eighteen hole
combinations. Either one you choose will be outstanding. Golf Digest
ranks it the #2 Public Course in New Jersey and over all #14 in the
state and Golf & Travel Magazine has it #32 in their Top Daily-Fee
Courses list. What most
golfers talk about after they play at this
wonderful
golf club is the unique personality of our layout with more than 100
acres of sand, some of it in bunkers, some of it in sweeping waste
areas. These sandy stretches, set against luxuriant
fairways that could almost be greens, are a dazzling eye-catcher that
makes you yearn to grab a club. We offer a remarkable target experience
that you will have a tough time finding elsewhere. “All you can see from
the tee boxes at times are bunkers and
waste areas,” says Jim Asher, marketing director of the Sand Barrens.
“But the fairways are very generous, and the traps shouldn’t be
difficult to avoid.”
The courses are visually intimidating with wide, flat fairways and
several trees lining the course. The greens are large and undulating.
To help you navigate this Michael Hurdzan & Dana Fry design is the
Prolink computer system.
Cape May National Golf Club
Cape May National Golf Club is one of the most natural golf courses
ever built. Nicknamed "The Natural", the course surrounds a fifty acre
private bird sanctuary. Cape May National started a new trend in
environmental sensitivity in course design while providing a classic
turn of the century golf course that golfers love. In fact, Cape May
National goes back to its roots to the late 1800's and its predecessor,
Cape May Country Club. The course surrounds one of the largest private
bird sanctuaries in the state of New Jersey, making it one of the most
beautiful locations in the state. This links-style course is one of the
most highly regarded courses in the state. Atlantic City Magazine gives
it their 2000 Best of the Shore award, The Jersey Golfer tells us
"Three of the top ranked holes in all of New Jersey," and Golf Digest
for Women voted it in their 50 Best Places to Play in America list.
The Karl Litten and Robert Mullock designed course flows through the
superb mix of wetlands, natural grasses, mounding and ponds. There are
no houses on the course, just rough-hewn natural beauty.
Avalon
Golf Club
Nestled between Ocean
City and Wildwood, along the Jersey coast, lies Avalon Golf Club.
Measuring from 6325 to 4924 yards, Avalon is a test for all skill
levels. At Avalon, players must contend with narrow fairways, an
abundance of water, and the most prominent feature, the wind. Being so
close to the shore, the wind might very well come into play on certain
days. Remember though, a breeze can be a help or a hindrance, so play
smart and savor the moment when the salty air wisps by your face and an
occasional gull flies by. This course, nicknamed "The Gem of the Shore,"
features tree-lined fairways and average-sized greens. Built in 1971
and designed by Bob Hendricks, this track has eight natural lakes that
come into play on twelve holes. With no two holes alike, the beauty is
everywhere and wildlife is abundant. The three par 3s on the back side
require pinpoint accuracy, particularly hole #17, measuring 166 yards
and demands a carry over a lake to a well-bunkered green.
Shore Gate
Golf Club
The outstanding track opened for play in the spring of 2002. Named as
one of GOLF MAGAZINE's "Top Ten You Can Play" for 2003, Shore Gate is
located a short drive south along the coast from Ocean City. This
traditional parkland course has rolling, tree-lined fairways.
There
are numerous bunkers and moguls located strategically throughout the
course, and water comes into play on several holes. Add to this large
and well undulated greens, and the result is a challenging round of
golf. Architect Ronald Fream of Fream & Dale Golf Plan designed Shore
Gate. The course has many hazards off every tee and surrounding every
green. A total of 7 ponds and 88 bunkers may come into play. Don't let
this scare you away from playing Shore Gate as most of the fairways and
greens are large but appear much smaller due to the architects created
illusion. The fairways never get boring as they are undulated. A variety
of lies in the fairway will make you think twice before you hit your
second shot. The greens have distinctive tiers and shapes creating what
seems to be three separate greens on each giant green. If your ball
finds the wrong plateau it will test your touch to manage a two putt.
The bunkers surrounding the greens are large and deep, you'll be lucky
if you can see the top of the flag when you enter one of these beasts.
With all its challenges Shore Gate is still very manageble to play and
really only penalizes those who take the risk and don't succeed. Not a
single hole mimics another and the architect gives a variety of
challenges, the course never seems boring as a change of pin from one
day to the next can add or subtract 40 yards alone to each hole.
