GOLF NOTE
PGA Village is the only community in the world with four championship
golf courses owned and operated by the PGA of America. It was created in
the mid-1990’s as its own entity with shops, restaurants and lifestyle.
Located 30 minutes North of the Palm Beaches, the complex is so
appealing that you could almost consider retiring here.
The North Course
This track was selected 7th in the category of “Best New
Affordable
Course” for 1996. This Pinehurst-style course features wetlands coming
into play and several elevation changes, but is considered a tame start
to your golfing adventure. But with the bunkers and the rolling
fairways, don’t count on its kindness. Tom Fazio designed this course to
play differently just by changing the hole location. A wide variety of
holes, from long par 5’s to sporty par 3’s, the course measures 7026
yards from the back tees and is sloped at 133. Rated 4 ½ Stars by Golf
Digest, people say they hope no one finds out about this place, because
of the value, condition and pace of play.
The PGA Country Club
Built in 1988 and created b y
Jim Fazio with classic golf tradition in mind. Formerly know as St.
Lucie West Country Club, the track highlights small, fast greens, but
smooth as a billiard table. Water comes into play on ten holes with over
80 green and fairway bunkers. Add to that, narrow fairways and you have
your hands full. Some of the fairways are dogleg configurations and
rolling. You don’t need to be long here, just accurate. This 4 Star
course starts out with a Par 5 and challenges you with one on 18 as
well.
The South Course
is a classic Florida layout. Tom Fazio created it against the back drop
of wetlands, palm trees and palmettos and is considered one of the most
beautiful courses in the state. There is a premium on the tee shot to
set up a good approach to the well-guarded greens and there are several
long carries. Even though Fazio features enormous landing zones, beware
of the massive multi-fingered bunker complexes that creep up to the
lakes that border the fairways and greens. The South joins its sister
with a rating of 4 ½ Stars by Golf Digest and is ranked 14th Best Course
in the State.
The Pete Dye Course
This course breaks up the Fazio family reunion with his 1998 creation.
Emphasizing the native surroundings and Dye’s uninhibited style for
creative design, the cha racteristics
of this track include pine straw roughs, vast coquina waste bunkers and
grass-based bunkers. Built on over 300 acres, the course is a 175-acre
links style course that weaves British Isles courses for flavor and
offers vast panoramic views. The ground features a 90-acre wetland
called "The Big Mamu" which makes for tremendously long vistas when
playing the course. The fairways are narrow off the tees, as are
the landing areas. Challenging water hazards come into play on ten
holes. This course can be a fun test
of your golfing skills.
