Sedona Golf Resort
Get ready for jaw-dropping beauty and exceptional golf
challenge like no other course. Each
hole is a unique adventure governed by its own set of circumstances, as
the course winds over and through the famed red rocks of Sedona. And, at every turn, the beauty seems all the more striking. Links Magazine lists Sedona Golf Resort on its 'must play'
list. This Gary Panks design
plays to 6646 yards and don't let the 129 slope fool you ... trouble lurks
around every water hazard, sand trap and red rock. My favorite hole is #15, a par 4 measuring 450 yards and bends
slightly to the right. An
arroyo runs up the left hand side and cuts across the fairway 120 yards
from the green. This hole
demands an accurate drive with a narrow fairway and two large bunkers on
the right placed about 235 yards from the tee. With a series of small bunkers and one large one protecting the
green, your approach shot is critical. Golf On The Rocks!
Oak Creek Country Club
This Robert Trent Jones desi gn, is truly a work of art. Nestled among the red rocks of Sedona, the views are
spectacular; the golf course, a masterpiece. The course is considered a very traditional layout, similar to a
Midwestern country club. In the
usual Jones manner, the fairways are classic tree-lined doglegs with
fairway bunkers strategically placed in the landing areas, and the greens
are surrounded with swirling greenside bunkers. The course does however allow plenty of room for error and always an
opportunity to get the errant shots back into the fairway. Even though the desert surrounds you, there are three lakes and water
comes into play twice on the front nine and three times on the back. This is a premier golf experience.
Verde
Santa Fe Golf Course
This track recei ved a rave review from Links Magazine and is
located nearby in Cottonwood. This
new Tim McGough-designed layout is a pure golf experience with dynamic
views of Sedona’s red rock country and the Mingus Mountains. The course is traditionally crafted and landscaped with wide
transition areas, dramatic elevation changes and subtle, two-tiered
greens. The landing areas are wide open and forgiving and here’s a
kicker … no sand bunkers in the design. Here’s the down side … the steep arroyos lurk among the
fairways. The signature hole
is #18, 1 544-yard, par 5 which calls for an elevated tee shot down to a
rolling fairway guarded by a natural wash. The approach shot is to a narrow green. Even though the course is situated about 4,000 feet above sea
level, the par-71 course is ideal for walking.
Elephant Rocks Golf Club in Williams
You will experience a course carved out of a forest
setting with deer and elk as frequent playing companions. Loca ted 30 miles
west of Flagstaff on Interstate 40, this treasure opened during the 30’s
with nine holes. The course was
completely redesigned in 1989 by Gary Panks and the new nine was just
completed in 2000. When the
forest opens up on some holes, you can see the imposing Bill Williams
Mountain and the San Francisco Peaks. The
very beginning of your golf experience is the original malpai rock
clubhouse. Constructed in 1932,
it gives you the rustic feel of the course. Believe me when I say, you will
feel like you are in the middle of God’s Country when you play this
course. One hole of particular
note is #12, a 150-yard, par 3, with a significant challenge from water and
an intimidating high-lipped bunker directly in front of the peninsula green.
Prescott Lakes Golf Club
You can be one of the first to experience the first
Hale Irwin course in Arizona. Located
in Presco tt, this exciting track opened in July of 2000 and is already
receiving great press. He
designed it to accommodate all levels of golfers with five different tee
boxes ranging from 4,724 to 7,216 yards. This mile-high course features great views of Willow Lake, Granite
Dells rock formations and the San Francisco Peaks. Designer Irwin concurs, “The Prescott Lakes course site is
unparalleled in its panoramic views.” He adds, “The challenge will lie in the creek crossings and
streambeds that may or may not contain water on the days you’re playing. Some carries will have to be negotiated but for the most part
I’ve tried to put water off the side of the fairways.” An added cool feature is the three covered bridges that you use to
cross some of the streams. The signature hole is the finishing one with a
light dogleg left on this par 5. Water
is on the right with even a waterfall and OB on the left. What a way to finish! |
