SummerGrove
Designers Jeff Burton and Joe T. Jemsek (of the Cog Hill Jemsek's)
created a course saving as many trees as possible. Wetland areas are
protected and habitats for
wildlife
were created. The course recently received the Silver Certification
designation from Audubon International. The first in Georgia to reach
this level. The course has zoysia fairways and bent-grass greens. The
zoysia is rather unusual, only East Lake CC and Cherokee Run, the Palmer
course in Conyers, use this grass. The benefit to the golfer is your
ball rests on top of the grass instead of into it, allowing that great
opportunity for an outstanding shot. The greens are wonderfully
maintained Crenshaw Bent-Grass. They are shaved back and you must be
careful on the 9th. If you hit your approach to the wrong area of the
green, the slope can carry your ball to a creek. on the right side.
Orchard Hills
One
of the best examples of links-style golf in the area is this Don Cottle,
Jr. design. On a misty morning, you can almost feel like you're back in
Scotland. Featuring 27 great holes, the Orchard and the Logo nines are
my favorites. Because of the open terrain, the wind can become a factor
when making a club selection. Knee-high grass rough defines the fairways
and water hazards come into play on eight holes. The greens are
undulating and fast, so have a fun day. You'll feel like you just played
the British Open.
River's Edge
Located on the lush banks of the Flint River, this scenic 6810-yard, par
71 layout features rolling hills, subtle, undulating greens and heck of
a challenge. The fairways are tree-lined with a few doglegs. Designer
Bobby Weed, used the natural creeks and wetland and then created a
couple ponds to have water come into play on seven holes. The signature
hole is #17, a 179-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot to a double-tiered
green with water guarding the right and a bunker on the left.
White Water Country Club
Another
outstanding
Arnold Palmer course. Former home of the Hooter's Tour Championship.
With rolling fairways, plenty of water hazards and bent grass greens, a
golfer will have a great challenge and a fun day. The front nine on this
course is tight because of its tree-lined fairways. The back is more
open, but you will encounter water more frequently. In fact, water
hazards (ponds, lakes, creeks and streams) come into play on fourteen
holes.
