The King & Bear
The latest addition to the Village is very special and historic.
Although thei r
best playing days are likely behind them, Arnold Palmer and Jack
Nicklaus still are busy leaving their mark on the golf world and between
them their design companies have built over 400 courses worldwide. But
now for the first time in history, the two Hall of Famers collaborated
to create this treasure. They both agreed to make this course
traditional in design. Palmer says, “This property is exceptional and
will lend itself to a natural rather than more artificial design.”
Nicklaus comments, “We agree that this course will have a more
traditional flavor, with a premium on accuracy and finesse around the
greens.” Since it just opened the fall of 2000, you can be the first kid
in your “village” to play it.
Slammer & the Squire
This course was named after golf legends San Snead and Gene Sarazen and
they actually consulted with designer B obby
Weed. His desire was to create a course that was both fun and
challenging and he definitely accomplished it. The track meanders
through the scenic beauty of native flatwoods and hardwood hammocks,
while bordering on wetland preserves and wildlife habitat. The greens
are very large, undulating and built like “upside-down” table tops,
which is reminiscent of vintage greens. It is home to the Senior PGA
Tour Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. Golf Digest gives it 4 stars as
well as special designation for service, condition and pace.
Cimarrone Golf & Country Club
Designed by renowned architect David Postlethwait, this course will give
you t he
ultimate water challenge or should I say, “water torture”. Every hole on
this track is highlighted by water hazards. Either lakes or marshes come
into play, but also provide you with incredible breathtaking
surroundings. The first hole is a 530-yard, par 5, featuring a dogleg
right fairway, which requires a tee shot that must carry at least 200
yards for a clear approach to the green. The fairways are well defined
and the greens are magnificent. Advanced players will appreciate the
numerous risk-reward opportunities provided by the strategically placed
bunkers and water hazards.
The Champions Club at Julington Creek
A regular stop on the Ho oter’s
Tour, this course is built among the scenic wetlands near Mandarin. The
course also hosted the 1997 World Junior Golf Cup U.S. Finals. It
meanders through the beautiful woods of Julington Creek Plantation.
Steve Melnyk designed this track in 1988 and features only 40 bunkers.
Melnyk built them more as targets than for penalty. Easy for him to say
… just wait until you hit into one of them. The signature hole is #17, a
222-yard, par 3. In fact, all the par 3’s are very interesting.
