Crosswater Course
Honored by Golf Digest as one of "America's 100 Greatest Courses," and
host of the 2007 - 2010 JELD-WEN Tradition major championship,
Crosswater is a heathland-style course situated on 600 magnificently
scenic acres of woodlands and carefully pres erved
wetlands. This course is the newest one and is also one of the
longest tracks in the country at 7683 yards, ouch! It is highlighted by
the Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers that come into play on seven
holes. The design, by Bob Cupp and US Amateur Champion John Fought, was
built among meadow, forest and carefully preserved swamp. One of the
most beautiful holes is #12, a 687-yard, par 5, which has a lake in play
and provides an outstanding view of Mount Bachelor. Here are a
few other accolades received: Certified Audubon Sanctuary - Audubon
International, #17 of America’s Best Residential Golf Courses -
Golf Week, "It is simply not possible to find a better manicured
course anywhere in the world. Period." - Golf Digest.
Woodlands Course
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1982, this track has been
improving every year. Lava rock and sagebrush, as well as the Lodgepole
and Ponderosa Pines trees that line the fairways define the course. The
non-a djoining
dogleg fairways, in conjunction with a multitude of sand bunkers, add to
the overall difficulty of the course. Numerous water hazards have also
been incorporated into the design. With the hilly terrain, plan on some
uneven lies. Woodlands' abundance of water and outcroppings of
lava rock place a premium on shot accuracy.
The 18th
is a pure sample of beauty ... this par 4 demands a long,
perfectly placed tee shot and an approach to a green virtually
surrounded by water. The only bail area is short.
Golf Digest rated this course #6 in the Best of State category and
Golf for Women lists the course as one of the “100 Best
Women-Friendly Courses.” The Woodlands has also earned
Sunriver Resort the distinction as a Golf Magazine Gold Medal
Award-Winning Resort.
Meadows Course
After opening in 1969 and having the resort to itself for so many years,
this Fred Federspiel design needed a facelift. Crosswater co-designer
John Fought was given the task and
$3.5million for the renovation. He did quite nicely. The course
received all new greens, removed some pine trees, widened fairways,
added and replaced bunkers and in some cases totally redesigned entire
holes. Fought’s design pays tribute to the great American courses of the
1920’s and 30’s with its aesthetic grace. Seven of the holes border
the meandering Sun River. The finishing hole is another long par 4 that
downlegs to the left, but you better drive the ball well to be able to
reach the green with your second shot. It is wonderful to have the
Meadows back in play.
Widgi Creek Golf Club
While you are in the area, you must play this local favorite. Nestled
amongst tall Ponderosa Pines, between the snowcapped peaks of the
Cascades and the spectacular Deschutes River, this track has become one
of the favorites in the Bend area. Tight fairways, undulating greens
and gorgeous scenery are main features of the 1991 Robert Muirs Graves
design. With the courses located at the base of Mount Bachelor, you can
expect many distractions during your round. Beautiful ponds come into
place on three holes. Hole #6, is a short par 4, but you must negotiate
a lake along the entire left side of the fairway and you approach must
avoid the water on the front and right. The green is a triple tiered. The
653-yard third hole is one of the longest Par 5s in the country and the
216-yard 11th hole is all the Par 3 you can handle.
Widgi
Creek was named ""Favorite Golf Course"" by the readers of the Bend
Bulletin in 2006.
