South Course
This is the premier course at Turnberry Isle. It has water hazards come
into play on fourteen of the eighteen holes. The signature hole is #18,
a 545-yard, par 5, requiring an approach shot to an island green. The
course was the site of the 1980 PGA Senior Championship, which was won
by Arnold Palmer. They offer what is reputed to be the world’s largest
triple green, measuring some 150 yards in length and serving three
different holes. You could, if you come in short, have the delighted
prospect of a putt of over 100 yards.
North Course
The North Course is shorter than the South Course, totaling 6403 yards
from the back tees. One of its unique features
is that it gives you a choice of shooting around or over its various
water hazards. It starts you off on #1 with a typical Robert Trent Jones
hole, into the wind with a lot of sand. No water comes into play, but
the next 6 holes do. Here’s a little trivia: Michael Jordan played 46
holes here on an off day during the 1997 Eastern Conference finals
against the Miami Heat.
A special note: The days you play these two courses, you will have
unlimited golf, so tee it up often and bring plenty of balls. The water
is everywhere. Twenty-six out of 36 holes can send you to your watery
grave.
Crandon Park Golf Course
Home of the PGA Senior Tour Caribbean Classic, this Bruce Devlin and
Robert von Hagge design was built in 1972. This scenic course was built
on Key Biscayne Island and the view back across Biscayne Bay is
incredible. You see all that civilization over there and on the island
you see coconut palms, red and white mangroves and saltwater lakes and
wildlife galore. As for the course, it features wide and generous
fairways and large greens of medium speed. Water hazards of lakes,
canals and the bay come into play on half the holes. The 521-yard
finishing hole can be a watery grave. At least one or two Senior PGA
Tour players in every group find the water off their drive from the back
box. When you need to hit the ball 230 yards to clear an inlet, it’s no
wonder.
